To classify Pirates Cove as merely a ‘restaurant’ is a misunderstanding of the culture; it is a Lower Alabama institution. Since 1957, this spot in Josephine has been the spiritual home of the Riff Raff—a badge worn with pride by the locals, sailors, and beach bums who frequent it. Located in the protected waters of Arnica Bay, it is arguably the most famous boat-up dive bar on the Gulf Coast. The atmosphere is less dining and more beach party. The uniform is a swimsuit, the floor is sand, and the dogs and children roam free, so keep an eye out. It’s loud, it’s chaotic in the best way, and it serves a greasy cheeseburger specifically engineered to soak up a long afternoon of rum. Grab a drink, let the kids swim, and accept that you are on Cove Time.
The Captain’s Log:
Coordinates: Arnica Bay (30.3218° N, 87.5340° W)
6664 County Road 95, Elberta, AL
(251) 987-1224
Navigation: Located north of the ICW (near Marker 165). Enter Arnica Bay carefully—the shoals outside the channel are unforgiving. Follow the private markers into the cove.
Docking: The signature move here is beaching. Pontoons and driving skiffs right onto the sand. There are ~16 fixed wooden slips (fenders required), but most boaters prefer to hit the beach. I pick my spot based on which way the wind and tide is going.
The Order: The Bushwacker (there’s a theme happening here), a Cheeseburger “all the way,” and Pizza (available Fri–Sun).
Pro Tip: Adjust your ETA. This is counter service and lines can get long on weekends. If you are only getting food, skip the lines and order and pay with the posted QR Links. You will get a text when your food is ready!
